Why Sri Lanka?

First and foremost, let’s get to grips with everything Sri Lanka has to offer. The diversity of Sri Lanka cannot be understated. It’s a country of emerald green hills punctuated with sacred Buddhist shrines, architectural remains, wildlife safaris and scenic hiking trails. It needs to be seen, walked, and soaked up, be that from a calm beach break or a full-on off-road trek.

From such a collection of curiosities it’s difficult to pick even a single stand-out attraction, but there are a few places deserving of special attention. Both the ruined city of Polonnaruwa and the Golden Temple of Dambulla are UNESCO heritage sites, offering unique glimpses into the fascinating history of the island. Their insight into the Buddhist legacy of  Sri Lanka is unmatched and unmissable in equal measure.

The crowing jewel of Sri Lanka is the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Traditionally, Sri Lankan Culture has held elephants in the utmost sacred regard, and the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage honours that tradition. From its foundation in 1975 the orphanage has cared for injured, abandoned and orphaned elephants. If you pay the orphanage a visit you can watch the elephants bathe, play and socialise. It’s an experience you certainly won’t find anywhere else, and it beautifully encapsulates the exotic richness of Sri Lankan culture.
