Admire Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as the Red Mosque, is an architectural wonder built in 1909. This tall red and white building is beautiful sight and very mesmerising. With swirls, zig zags and checkers surrounding the whole thing, it was built in the style of Saracenic. Saracenic is a style of architecture which combines both Islamic and Indian features, making it a beautiful sight to see!

Its enchanting candy-stripe colour scheme is said to have taken inspiration from a pomegranate, along with the five domes which take the shape of a pomegranate also. You will easily be able to recognise the Red Mosque and it is said that is used to be a landmark for sailors approaching the port.

You are able to take a look around the inside, however it’s generally not a ‘tourist attraction’. If you are wanting to go into the building, avoid going during prayer hours and above all remember to be respectful of religious customs. This includes women covering their arms, legs and hair.

Visit the Gangaramaya Temple

Gangara Maya Temple is a beautiful Buddhist place of worship which sits alongside the Beira Lake. This tranquil temple offers a serene atmosphere for all of its visitors. With incredible Buddha statues and remarkable ceiling paintings, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the more popular tourist spots.

Amongst the temple you can find a museum, a training centre and much more. You can learn more about the temple’s history and the capital’s history too. In the main temple this is where you’ll find a large statue of Buddha, along with the ceiling paintings which tell the story of his life.

You must visit the Relic Chamber which pays homage to Buddha. There are a variety of Buddha statues and relics within the stunning rooms. Whether you are religious or not, it’s a beautiful place to admire.

On the grounds you will also find a sacred fig tree, also known as Bodhiya. It is believed that this is where Buddha gained enlightenment! This shows just how important the area is to those who are devoted to Buddhism.

Tour the National Museum of Colombo

Established back in 1877, the National Museum of Colombo is the largest museum in the whole of Sri Lanka. It offers a deeper insight into Sri Lankan history, from paintings to swords and guns.

As you walk through each of the rooms, you’ll be able to learn more about the country’s ancient past including it’s historical kingdoms, and all about its colonial period. One of the main attractions which gets a lot of visitors is the crown jewel and throne of the last King of Kandy.

With over 100,000 exhibits, it is a fantastic trip to make. It has come a long way since it opened in 1877, when it only had 800 exhibits.

In addition, you can also find an incredible natural history section of the museum which is home to fossils, bones and even prehistoric cave paintings.

Enjoy the local food

So, this one is usually a given wherever you find yourself in the world. But we definitely recommend trying some of the local cuisine of Colombo! If you are usually the type of tourist who sticks to what they know, maybe chips, pizza and a McDonalds here and there, we really suggest branching out.

The dishes made in Colombo are extraordinary and are bursting with flavour. They use a variety of different spices and herbs to make every meal truly delicious. We recommend heading on over to the street food markets for a real authentic taste.

From the staple dish of rice and curry, to the isso-wadey which is a dish made up of a patty created from lentils and grims, topped with shrimps. For the foodies out there, you’re in for a treat!

Head over to Beira Lake

As one of Colombo’s most famous landmarks, Beira Lake is on our must-see list when you’re in the capital. It’s situated right in the middle of the city, and it offers a serene break away from the bustling streets.

The lake itself used to be a lot bigger, but over time as the city has developed, it’s now around 160 acres. There’s still plenty of space to take a trip around the lake and enjoy the magnificent views. Or maybe even a romantic boat ride with your significant other.

If you really want to up the romance, in the centre of the lake is a small island called Lover’s Island. This sheltered port allows couples to spend time together where PDA is more accepted. The bridge that leads across to the island is very picturesque and provides the perfect backdrop for your stroll.

Spend time at Pettah Floating Market

What was once one of the worst areas in Pettah, has now been transformed to become a beautiful market upon the water.

Back in the 1990s, this area was very dangerous and was often avoided by local people. With abandoned buildings, drug dealers and dark alleyways, you wouldn’t think it was the same place.

Today you will find fantastic stalls selling everything from clothes and shoes to tasty snacks. Even if you don’t wish to buy anything, it’s still a great place to check out as the more relaxed atmosphere provides a serene walk along the water’s edge.

Appreciate the Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil

We appreciate that this temple name may not easily roll of the tongue, so we’d maybe advise practicing your pronunciation if you are wanting directions. But the Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil is a stunning Hindu Temple in Colombo.

Also known as Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple by it’s followers, this temple is the oldest Hindu temples in the city. It’s colourful statues and intricate details make it a fantastic sight to see. You will find detailed sculptures of the gods Ganesha and Shiva, along with other shrines dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Those who enter the temple have to take off their shoes and wash their feet before going any further. You also cannot take any photos, unless you have approval prior to entering.

Check out the Incredible Koneswaram Temple

Overlooking one of the world’s largest natural harbours is the spectacular Koneswaram Temple. This ancient temple is dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva, and is believed to date back to 400BC.

It’s perched high above the city and is surrounded by the sea on both sides. It’s easy to spot from afar due to it’s magnificent size and colours. Sadly the temple was pillaged in the 17th Century, and destroyed by Portugese colonists. However, the sacred temple was rebuilt and stands tall and proud now.

It’s a glorious place to visit whilst in Colombo as you can see just how significant this place of worship is.

Visit the Lotus Tower

Last but not least, is one of the symbolic landmarks of Sri Lanka – The Lotus Tower. The tower is the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia since 2019! Standing at an impressive 1,150 ft in the heart of the city, it’s not easily missed.

So, you may be wondering what else is there to this tower besides a pretty sight? Well, there’s a shopping mall, museums, a hotel, restaurants and banquet halls! Further to all that, you can head to the top of the tower to visit the revolving restaurant which provides incredible views of the city.

The main purpose of the tower is to serve as a transmission tower for tv and radio. However, that doesn’t stop the Lotus Tower from providing everything else and more.

If you aren’t a fan of big heights, we don’t blame you if you want to admire it from ground level. During the night time it is illuminated to help it resemble a lotus even more, making it a beautiful sight.
