Culture

Sri Lanka is a land of opportunity, narrated through a glittering tapestry of culture and vibrant nature. Teeming with bird life, elephants and leopards. It's an unspoiled window to a world before the distractions of the modern world.

Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine focuses on home-grown ingredients, including freshly-picked cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, chillies, onions, peppers and tomatoes. Much of the cooking is tempered with delicately flavoured coconut milk from the island's own palm trees, and curry dishes are often eaten with flat bread called roti. Ceylon tea is a popular beverage, as is arrack, a coconut-based brandy-like drink.

Climate

Based on its tropical latitude, Sri Lanka is hot and humid throughout the year. Summer monsoons May - October and winter monsoons December - March cover the south and south-western parts of the island with rain, whereas the central and northern regions tend to remain dryer.

Things to do

Exploration is at the heart of a Sri Lankan holiday, and the land's curiosities are quite unlike anywhere else. Visit the fascinating elephant orphanage of Pinnawela, take an exciting elephant trek through the forest near Habarana, see the view over Anuradhapura's great dagobas (Buddhist shrines) from the holy hill of Mihintale, or wander through countless ruins, hillsides and waterfronts.
