The Changing of the Guard – Athens
Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the military elite of Greece. Also known as evzones, these highly disciplined soldiers march to and from their posts. Located in the Greek capital of Athens, it’s a great free thing to see on your trip.
With their traditional uniform, and armed with their guns, it’s a fantastic sight to see. As they stand for 60 minutes, they are perfectly still like a statue. Then, they work in pairs to coordinate a change of guards. It’s similar to a well-rehearsed dance as they swiftly sway their arms and legs.
The changing happens on the hour in front of the parliament building in Syntagma Square. Or, if you make a trip there for Sunday at 11am, you will see a whole group of evzones in their official dresses for the official ceremony.
Stroll the National Gardens – Athens
In the heart of the city centre are the magnificent verdant gardens. This vast area is home beautiful flowers, duck ponds and wooden benches. With plenty of trees providing shade, it’s a great spot to escape the sun’s rays.
Open from sunrise to sunset, there’s enough time to explore the gardens and all of the beauty it holds. There are statues to discover of famous poets and politicians. Plus, a small zoo which is home to wild goats, chickens, peacocks and a few smaller animals.
If you are travelling with little ones it’s perfect for escaping the sunshine and having a bit to eat on one of the benches. Or take them to the ponds and feed the ducks who will be happy to take any food you give them.
Explore the Flea Markets – Athens
Monastiraki Flea Market in Athens is a unique shopping spot for all your second hand goods. As one of the most popular flea markets in the area, you can gaze upon a variety of products, for free!
Unless something catches your eye that you really must buy, there’s no need to spend a penny at the markets. Just exploring the flea markets is an experience in itself. Browse the antique goods, hand made crafts and all things in between.
Inside Monastiraki’s Flea Market you can also find the Athens Antique market, which is open every Sunday.
Discover the Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa – Zante
Take in fantastic panoramic views of the area as you hike your way to the top. Then, be met by the historical Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa. Discovering this 16th century building is perfect for a relaxing day where you don’t want to do much.
Although you aren’t able to access the inside of the building, a walk around the grounds is still one of the interesting and free things to do in Greece. There are murals alongside the walls which depict historical events and of course the beautiful view to see.
It’s important to note that it’s not the easiest place to reach. Especially if you are planning to make the trip there in your car. It’s steep and rocky, so make sure you have suitable footwear if you attempt the climb.
Check out the Old Town – Rhodes
If you are staying in Rhodes, you have to explore the old town. Surrounded by medieval walls and tall gates, this piece of history is an amazing place to discover.
A beautiful part of the old town is the street of Knights. Here you will find a well-preserved street around 1/3 of a mile long. This was home to the Inns of the Tongues where the Knights stayed, ate, and also held meetings.
There are also plenty of tourist shops to browse. And of course if you don’t mind spending a little bit, you can grab an ice cream or make a stop in one of the restaurants for a bite to eat.
Explore Mt Psiloritis – Crete
The highest mountain of Crete, Psiloritis, is a sacred mountain in Greek mythology. Ideon Cave on the mountain is believed to be the birthplace of the god Zeus.
You can enjoy views of Crete as you reach the top, but there’s also the opportunity to enjoy the hike before. If you are an outdoors person, climbing the mountain should be on your list.
As you take in the fresh air, you are constantly surrounded by beautiful sights. But as we stated, this is the highest mountain, so it’s not an easy hike. Please make sure you and fit and healthy enough to take on the climb before you begin.
